How it is worked out

Fabric to order = area × roll width ÷ (roll width − overlap), plus wastage, rounded up to a whole m². Rolls are then rounded up, because fabric is bought whole.

Worked example: 1,000 m² with 4 m wide rolls and 200 mm overlap needs 1,052.6 m² with overlap, so 1,053 m² to order. At 100 m per roll (400 m² each) that is 3 rolls, with 147 m² spare.

Roll size, overlap and wastage start as example values and are yours to change. These are estimates, so check them against your supplier and your specification.

Common questions

How much geofabric do I need to cover an area?
More than the plain area, because each strip overlaps the next. Fabric needed = area × roll width ÷ (roll width − overlap), plus an allowance for wastage. The calculator then rounds up to whole rolls.
How much overlap should I allow?
It depends on the product and your specification, so use the figure your supplier or specification gives. The calculator starts at 150 mm as a placeholder and lets you change it.
What roll size should I use?
Use the width and length of the roll you are buying. The calculator starts with 3.8 m by 100 m as an example only. Roll sizes vary by product and supplier.
How much wastage should I allow?
It starts at 5% for trimming, end laps and mistakes. Complex shapes with lots of cutting need more than a simple rectangle.
Can it work out the binder I need under the fabric?
Yes, if you enter a binder rate in litres per square metre from your specification. It multiplies that by the plain area, so check your specification for whether the sprayed area should extend past the fabric edges.
Is this accurate enough to order from?
It is arithmetic on the numbers you enter. Treat it as an estimate and check roll sizes, overlaps and binder rates against your supplier and your specification before ordering.
